So some pathetic, or at least misguided, Americans are burning our democracy to the ground in order to save it, and in the process turning us into a police state.
That's no fun.
So in a moment of denial, I recently spent an hour listening to a dozen cover versions of the Elvis tune, Can’t Help Falling in Love. I’ve done this before in moments of boredom, moments where my mother might have said, “Read a book.” But I didn’t have a book handy, and anyway surfing the internet temporarily tricks you into thinking you’re being productive.
Full disclosure. I never liked Elvis. I find his voice artificially precious. But I like Can’t Help Falling in Love. It’s the only one of his songs I can tolerate. If you have even a halfway popular song you like, you can probably find at least fifty covers of it in a short YouTube search. Try it out. I’ve done this with Over the Rainbow (my favorite song … here's Eva Cassidy’s version), and Someone to Watch Over Me (tie … Ella Fitzgerald and Sting, of all people).
So here are five Elvis wannabes I liked, from the famous to the obscure. Pick one or find your own and let me know your thoughts. If you're not a YouTube subscriber you may have to suffer through some commercials.
