Yes, I Wrote a Letter to the Pope

I'm not given to religiosity. Don't like it, as a rule. So I hesitated to post this letter publicly, lest I overstep my own boundary. And yet, I have to ask my MAGA Catholic friends, what were you thinking?

Pope Leo 14. It's not a political emergency. It's a moral crisis.

I'm not the best of Catholics, lapsed perhaps, but I hope not fallen. But after 16 years of Catholic education, I did learn this: CRUELTY is not an option.

And so, I ask my MAGA Catholic friends, what were you thinking? The President you voted for is a cruel, vulgar, lawless, some would say depraved man, perhaps on the edge of sanity. I ask you to revisit your choice, because the United States you purport to love is being systematically strangled by your hero.

With that in mind, I wrote this letter in the hope that someone with more authority than me can persuade you of your error.

 Dear Father,
I never expected to be writing a letter to the Holy Father, but then I never thought I’d see an American Holy Father. But since you are, you more than any other global leader must recognize the great peril we are in, because the President of the United States is a cruel, vulgar, corrupt and lawless wannabe dictator.
This is not just a temporal problem, but a deeply spiritual one. Not just a political emergency but also a moral crisis. Inexplicably, polls show that one third of American Catholics support this man. Why? Where is their Catholic faith in the face of such obvious cruelty?
They are so wrong, these MAGA Catholics. Well, people are entitled to be wrong (I practice it myself sometimes), but the policies they endorse, and the behaviors they overlook, are truly dangerous, to ourselves and to the world. And they do so, apparently, out of animus towards many of their fellow Americans, mistaking their own self-righteous anger for virtue and patriotism.
Father, you know this. I know that you know this. And so I implore you to please, please find a way, within the boundaries of your holy office, to signal to our fellow Catholics the profound nature of their error. They need guidance in this most dangerous moment.
Thank you Father, and God bless America.

Send your Republican Senators a letter and ask them to consider what future generations will think, what their grandchildren and great grandchildren will think and when they ask, "What did you do when Donald Trump strangled the life out the United States?"

Letter to Denmark

We are in peril because Donald Trump knows nothing and cares even less for our shared history, our shared threats, our shared values. He knows nothing. One can only hope that reason prevails.

In "The Last Battle," the final book of C.S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia, "Aslan" the lion lets a disbeliever off the hook. It's almost as though Aslan had read the Beatitudes. One wishes the ICE-men in Minneapolis would read it, too.
